Suspended Arizona linebacker out

TUCSON, Dec. 12 (UPI) -- Junior linebacker Sterling Lewis will miss Arizona's Las Vegas Bowl game Dec. 20 because of drunken driving and other charges, the Arizona Daily Star reported.

The 5-foot-11 linebacker from Copperas Cove, Texas, was third on the Wildcats' defense with 59 tackles.

He transferred to Tucson following an MVP season in 2007 at Blinn Junior College in Brenham, Texas.

A Tucson police report said Lewis 21, was pulled over early Thursday for driving the wrong way.

Sgt. Fabian Pacheco, a police department spokesman, said Lewis cooperated until he learned his vehicle was going to be impounded because his blood-alcohol level was at 0.15 or above, which is considered to be extreme DUI in Arizona.

Also, Lewis argued the stop was a racial issue.

Lewis allegedly used hand gestures and taunted officers, police said, which lead to additional charges.

Coach Mike Stoops met with Lewis Thursday afternoon before making his decision.

"He'll be suspended for the game, but will continue to practice with the team," Stoops said.
