MIAMI, Dec. 7 (UPI) -- A University of Miami assistant football coach freed a man trapped in his car after the car skidded off Interstate 95 and flipped over Saturday.

Stephen Field, a former tight end at the University of Tuskegee, stopped to help when he saw the crash Saturday afternoon, the Miami Herald reported. The overturned car was in a ditch against a tree.

"The car was smoking in the front," said Field. "You could smell the gas."

Field used a hammer supplied by another man to smash the windshield. Then he pulled the driver out.

His main concern, Field said, was that the car, wedged in place by the tree, might come crashing down before he got the driver out and away.

The driver was transported to a hospital. Paramedics said he seemed likely to survive.
