EDMONTON, Alberta, Dec. 4 (UPI) -- Alex Hemsky and Andrew Cogliano both scored in the final minute Wednesday to end a Dallas comeback bid and give Edmonton a 5-2 victory over the Stars.

The win allowed the Oilers to move out of a last-place tie with Dallas and St. Louis in the Western Conference.

Dallas was coming off its first two-game winning streak of the season, but endured a major distraction this week when forward Sean Avery was suspended indefinitely by the league Tuesday for demeaning comments he made about former girlfriends now dating other NHL players.

Avery apologized for those remarks prior to Wednesday's game.

Edmonton dominated the first two periods, getting goals from Shawn Horcoff, Lubomir Visnovsky and Marc-Antoine Pouliot while Mathieu Garon was perfect in goal.

Mike Modano, however, scored twice for the Stars -- the second goal coming with 1:40 to play. Dallas then pulled goaltender Marty Turco, but Hemsky quickly scored an empty-net goal and Cogliano piled on another score with 13 seconds to go.

Garon finished with 23 saves.
