SAN FRANCISCO, Dec. 4 (UPI) -- The San Francisco Giants Thursday signed free agent shortstop Edgar Renteria to a two-year contract.

The 33-year-old Renteria, a five-time NL All-Star and two-time Gold Glove winner, played for Detroit last season, but the Tigers chose not to pick up his 2009 signing option.

Detroit acquired from him Atlanta in a three-player deal on Oct. 29, 2007.

"We're extremely excited to bring a player of Edgar's caliber to our organization," said Giants general manager Brian Sabean. "He is a complete player on both sides of the ball, a clutch performer and a winner."

Renteria likely will be San Francisco's shortstop since Omar Vizquel was not offered salary arbitration and is a free agent.

Renteria also has played for Florida, St. Louis and Boston.

He has a .290 career batting average with 127 homers, 817 RBI and 280 stolen bases in 1,860 games (7,140 at-bats).

In 2008, he batted .270 with 10 homers and 55 RBI.
