Auburn football coach resigns

AUBURN, Ala., Dec. 3 (UPI) -- Auburn football coach Tommy Tuberville announced his resignation Wednesday following a season-ending 36-0 loss to archrival Alabama.

The loss to the top-ranked and unbeaten Crimson Tide ended a disappointing 5-7 2008 season, and eliminated any chance at a bowl appearance.

"The last 10 years have been a great time in my life, both professionally and personally," Tuberville said on the school's Web site. "It's been a great place to coach and live, and we've had a lot of success along the way. I'm going to remain in Auburn and help the Auburn family however I can. I'm very appreciative of the coaches, players, staff and Auburn fans over the last decade."

In 10 seasons at Auburn, Tuberville compiled an 85-40 record, including a 13-0 campaign and No. 2 national ranking in 2004.

Last Saturday's defeat ended a six-year winning streak against Alabama, but boosters had voiced severe criticism about the 2008 season.
