EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J., Dec. 2 (UPI) -- Receiver Plaxico Burress, facing charges after shooting himself in a nightclub, was suspended and placed on injured reserve Tuesday by the New York Giants.

Burress's suspension was for four games and his placement on the reserve/non-football injury list officially ends his season.

"This is an important time for him to take care of his body and heal up and also deal with the very serious legal consequences and other issues in his life," said Giants President John Mara. "When I spoke with Plaxico he expressed great remorse for letting down his teammates."

Burress was arraigned on two weapons charges after surrendering to authorities Monday. He was wounded in the right thigh early Saturday at a New York nightclub.

Burress had been suspended previously this season and missed the Giants' Oct. 2 game against Seattle for conduct detrimental to the team.

"The decision we made today regarding Plaxico's roster status was based on the examination of Plaxico by our team physician," General Manager Jerry Reese said, adding the team physician estimated he needed 4-6 weeks to heal.

Burress signed a $35 million, five-year contract in September. He has 35 receptions for 454 yards with four touchdowns this season.

"When you lose a player of Plaxico's ability, it is incumbent that everybody step up and fill the void," Coach Tom Coughlin said. "In the last two seasons, this team has done an outstanding job of that."

Burress arrived at Giants Stadium Tuesday morning for treatment for his gunshot wound and an earlier hamstring injury. He did not appear to be limping as he passed a group of reporters, The New York Times said.
