ANAHEIM, Calif., Nov. 28 (UPI) -- Jeff Teague's 29 points and six assists Friday allowed No. 24 Wake Forest to escape with an 82-79 win over Texas El Paso at Anaheim's 76 Classic.
The victory came in the college basketball tournament's second round when Wake finally quelled a determined effort by its underdog foe.
WFU had a 57-48 advantage with about 12 minutes to play after 42-33 edge at the break, and when UTEP closed to 70-66 on Randy Culpepper's basket, Teague capped his game-high output with two free throws with 14 seconds left.
James Johnson had 18 points and five rebounds, and Al-Farouq Aminu added 15 points and eight rebounds for the unbeaten Demon Deacons (5-0), who next meet either Arizona State or Baylor in Sunday's final.
Stefon Jackson led UTEP with 31 points and nine rebounds.
Culpepper scored 15, and Arnett Moultrie added 13 points and 13 rebounds for the Miners (3-2), who have lost two of their last three contests.
