OTTAWA, Nov. 27 (UPI) -- Jason Spezza scored the game-winner in the first round of a shootout Thursday, lifting the Ottawa Senators to a 2-1 win over the Toronto Maple Leafs.
After Ottawa's Mike Fisher and Toronto's Nikolai Kulemin traded goals early in the first period, the rest of regulation and the overtime period were scoreless.
Spezza, the first shooter in the shootout, banged his wrist shot off the right post and into the net.
Later, after Alex Auld made saves on Nikolai Kulemin and Lee Stempniak, Daniel Alfredsson sealed the win when his wrist shot beat Toronto netminder Vesa Toskala, giving the Senators their second straight victory.
Auld was credited with 25 saves on 26 shots.
Toskala stopped 34-of-35 shots in regulation and the overtime in the Maple Leafs' fifth straight loss.
There were no power-play goals in six combined man-advantage opportunities.
Before the contest, the Toronto Sun reported the signing of Brian Burke as Toronto's president and its 13th general manager.
