SUSSEX, Va., Nov. 25 (UPI) -- A Virginia judge gave quarterback Michael Vick a suspended sentence Tuesday after he pleaded guilty to a dogfighting charge.

Vick pleaded guilty in a plea agreement in a Surry County courtroom where he also publicly apologized to his family and "all the kids who looked up to me as a role model."

The Daily Press newspaper in Newport News, Va., said Vick continues to serve a 23-month federal sentence in Kansas stemming from the dogfighting operation based on his estate.

Lawyers for the onetime Atlanta Falcons star said Vick needed to clear up the local charges pending against him so that he would be qualified for a federal halfway house program as his sentence nears its end.
