MURFREESBORO, Tenn., Nov. 22 (UPI) -- Bobby Maze made five of Tennessee's seven free throws over the final 2:30 Friday, allowing the No. 13 Volunteers to hold off Middle Tennessee State 86-76.

The Vols agreed to play a road game against one of their in-state challengers, and they had a fight on their hands throughout the contest.

Tennessee led by four at halftime and maintained a lead of at least 10 points for most of the second period. The Blue Raiders were able to close to within six in the final minutes, but Tennessee (3-0) made enough of its free throws to prevent an upset.

Tyler Smith led the Volunteers with 18 points and Maze had 12. Tennessee was tested despite making 55 percent of its shots from the field.

Middle Tennessee (2-1) got 17 from Demetrius Green.
