NEW YORK, Nov. 21 (UPI) -- Nolan Smith scored 16 points Friday and No. 5 Duke used a tremendous defensive effort to defeat Michigan 71-56 in the title game of the 2K Sports Classic.

The Blue Devils limited Michigan to 19 field goals and a 35 percent shooting effort from the floor. The Wolverines attempted 23 three-pointers and made only six.

Michigan reached the tournament's title game at Madison Square Garden by upsetting No. 4 UCLA Thursday. The Wolverines trailed by eight at halftime against Duke and came no closer than that during the final 20 minutes.

Kyle Singler delivered 15 points and eight rebounds for Duke (5-0).

Manny Harris scored 25 for the Wolverines, who suffered their first lost after opening the season with three wins.
