SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico, Nov. 20 (UPI) -- Jeremy Hazell put Seton Hall in front with 1:20 to play Thursday and the Pirates held on to surprise No. 20 USC 63-61.
The victory came in the Puerto Rico Tip-Off Classic and set Seton Hall up for a Friday meeting with No. 12 Memphis.
USC became the first nationally ranked team this season to lose to an unranked opponent. No. 21 Davidson lost this week, but that setback came against 14th-ranked Oklahoma.
Hazell gave Seton Hall a 62-59 lead with a three-pointer, after which USC's Taj Gibson scored with a rebound to bring the Trojans within one with 5.8 seconds to go.
Eugene Harvey was fouled immediately after the Pirates inbounded the ball, but he could make only one of two foul shots. A desperation three-point attempt at the buzzer to win it by Daniel Hackett failed to hit the rim.
Seton Hall is unbeaten in three games while USC dropped to 1-2. The Trojans will play Chattanooga Friday in the tournament's consolation bracket.
Harvey led the Pirates with 18 points and five assists.
Gibson scored 19 to pace USC.
