NEW YORK, Nov. 19 (UPI) -- Mike Mussina, who is 187 strikeouts short of 3,000 for his career, reportedly has decided to retire.

Foxsports.com reported Wednesday Mussina plans to announce his retirement this week.

Mussina has been in the major leagues for 18 years, having spent the last eight of them with the New York Yankees. He reached 20 wins last season for the first time in his career.

His 2,813 strikeouts rank sixth among active pitchers and 19th on the all-time list. His first 10 years in the majors were spent with Baltimore.

Mussina has a career record of 270-153 and an ERA of 3.68. He will turn 40 in December.
