BOSTON, Nov. 19 (UPI) -- The Boston Red Sox shipped outfielder Coco Crisp to Kansas City Wednesday for right-handed reliever Ramon Ramirez in a player-for-player trade.
Crisp, 29, batted .283 last season, but was expendable due to the solid emergence of Jacoby Ellsbury.
Crisp slugged seven home runs, with 41 RBI, 55 runs scored and 20 stolen bases.
In three seasons with the Red Sox, the .280 career hitter batted .271 with 21 homers and 137 RBI.
A $5.75 million paycheck next season and an $8 million club option with a $500,000 buyout for 2010 didn't help his cause because Boston lacked bullpen depth before acquiring Ramirez in the deal.
Ramirez was 3-2 in 71 games last season with one save and an ERA of 2.64 in 71 2/3 innings.
Ellsbury, 25, playing his first full major league season in 2008, batted .280 with nine homers, 47 RBI and 50 stolen bases.
