COLLEGE PARK, Md., Nov. 12 (UPI) -- The Washington Post reported Wednesday the indefinite suspension of Maryland linebacker Rick Costa, charged with two counts of second-degree assault.

The charges stem from an alleged incident at the Cornerstone Grill & Loft in College Park early Sunday morning.

Prince George's County (Md.) police spokesman Henry Tippett told the newspaper Costa is accused of punching an unidentified police officer in the face when bar employees told Costa and two other men that the bar was closed and that they had to leave.

The officer said "Costa became belligerent and punched him in the right side of his face and eye," Tippett told the newspaper in a telephone interview.

The officer, "who observed Costa as intoxicated and disorderly," was transported to a local hospital for treatment," the spokesman said.

Maryland football Coach Ralph Friedgen said the suspension of the senior from Moorestown, N.J. is indefinite.
