NHL: Washington 3, N.Y. Rangers 1

WASHINGTON, Nov. 8 (UPI) -- Backup goalie Brent Johnson made 28 saves on 29 shots Saturday night while helping the Washington Capitals record a 3-1 win over the New York Rangers.

Johnson's near flawless night in place of the struggling Jose Theodore was marred only by left wing Aaron Voros' sixth goal (power play) at 6:27 of the third period.

Washington's goals were scored by Brooks Laich and Tom Poti, both in the first period, and Alexander Semin, whose 11th goal this season went into an empty net late in the third.

Because high-scoring Alexander Ovechkin has been held in check, Semin has been Washington's offensive force.

The Capitals, winners in two of their last three games, have recorded a point in all six home games (5

1) at the start of the 2008-09 season.

Goalie Henrik Lundqvist yielded two goals on 27 shots for the Rangers, who fell to 4-2-1 on the road.
