Suzuki, Hunter lead AL Gold Glove winners
NEW YORK, Nov. 6 (UPI) -- Veteran outfielders Ichiro Suzuki and Torii Hunter captured their eighth straight Gold Glove Awards when the American League winners were announced Thursday.
Both players won their first Gold Glove in 2001, while the only other repeat winners from 2007 were Cleveland outfielder Grady Sizemore and Seattle third baseman Adrian Beltre, Suzuki's teammate.
Other winners were: Tampa Bay first baseman Carlos Pena, Boston second baseman Dustin Pedroia, Texas shortstop Michael Young, New York Yankees pitcher Mike Mussina and Minnesota catcher Joe Mauer.
"I take a lot of pride in my defense," Hunter told MLB.com. "It's one part of the game that can be a constant if you concentrate on what you're doing."
Hunter joined the LA Angels in 2008 following seven seasons with Minnesota.
Mussina won his seventh Gold Glove, but his first since 2003, and Mauer was a first-time winner.
NL winners were announced Wednesday.
Matteson leads year's final PGA Tour event
LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla., Nov. 6 (UPI) -- Troy Matteson eagled two holes, shot a 9-under 63 and grabbed the first-round lead Thursday at the Children's Miracle Network Classic.
It is the last tournament of the year on the PGA Tour.
Matteson played on the Palm Course at the Walt Disney World Resort. The Magnolia Course is also being used for the event.
A player must be among the top 125 money winners to compete on next year's tour and five players below the 125 mark were within two shots of the lead.
Scott Verplank and Kevin Streelman were tied for second at 64 along with Jimmy Walker, who is ranked 192nd.
Those at 65 included Rich Beem (No. 139), Robert Garages (141), Robert Gamez (190) and Kirk Triplett (245) along with Steve Marino, who is 41st in earnings.
Davis Love III, Zach Johnson, Stewart Cink and Robert Allenby were among those at 66.
Erik Compton, five weeks removed from his second heart transplant and playing on a sponsors exemption, shot a 70. Compton is allowed to ride in a cart for this tournament.
Bonds wants federal charges dropped
SAN FRANCISCO, Nov. 6 (UPI) -- Barry Bonds wants a U.S. judge in California to dismiss most of the charges he faces from the steroids scandal, the San Jose (Calif.) Mercury News reported.
The charges, all felonies, stem from his grand jury testimony in the probe of BALCO, the lab cited for steroids distribution in 2003.
Bonds, 44, became major league baseball's all-time home run leader when he hit his 762nd round-tripper in the 2007 season, but was not signed in 2008 by any team.
He has denied knowingly taking illegal performance-enhancing substances.
The newspaper reported six lawyers representing Bonds said in a pretrial motion Wednesday that 10 of the 15 counts Bonds faces should be dismissed for a variety of reasons, including one claiming that some of the questions posed to Bonds in the grand jury session were "fundamentally ambiguous."
The lawyers argued before U.S. District Judge Susan Illston in San Francisco.
Bonds faces up to 30 months in prison if he is convicted.
Jankovic advances to Doha semifinals
DOHA, Qatar, Nov. 6 (UPI) -- Jelena Jankovic, the world's top-ranked women's tennis player, won her match Thursday at the round-robin Sony Ericsson Championships.
The Serbian, the No. 1 seed at the season-ending tournament, secured a berth in Saturday's semifinals with a 7-6 (8-6), 6-4 victory over No. 6 Svetlana Kuznetsova of Russia in the White Group.
"In the beginning for a couple of games I played very well, but then I kind of stopped," said Jankovic, who hurt her back midway through the match.
Kuznetsova sank to 0-2 and has been eliminated from semifinal contention, along with Russia's Vera Zvonareva.
In the Maroon Group, reigning Wimbledon champion Venus Williams, the seventh seed, recorded a 5-7, 6-1, 6-0 win over her younger sister, Serena, the third seed. In another Maroon Group match, fifth-seeded Elena Dementieva of Russia downed compatriot and No. 2 seed Dinara Safina 6-2, 6-4.
Sunday's champion will collect $1.34 million.
Roethlisberger tops NFL salaries
NEW YORK, Nov. 6 (UPI) -- Pittsburgh quarterback Ben Roethlisberger is No. 1 on the NFL money-making list this year at more than $27.4 million, a survey shows.
The Steelers star, a No. 1 pick in 2004, is one of two quarterbacks among the top four in the annual USA Today pro football payroll review. Oakland's JaMarcus Russell, the overall No. 1 selection in the 2007 draft, ranks fourth at nearly $16.9 million.
Minnesota's defensive end Jared Allen is second on the list at more than $ 21.119 million and Arizona wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald third at more than $17.103.
Atlanta running back Michael Turner is No. 5 at more than $16 million.
