COL FB: Virginia Tech 23, Maryland 13

BLACKSBURG, Va., Nov. 6 (UPI) -- Freshman Darren Evans rushed for 253 yards Thursday and Virginia Tech improved its chances for a berth in the ACC title game by downing No. 21 Maryland 23-13.

Evans produced his yardage on 32 carries, including a run of 50 yards. His only touchdown came on a one-yard run in the second period gave the Hokies a 14-3 lead.

Virginia Tech improved to 5-3 for the season and to 3-2 in the ACC's Coastal Division. The Hokies control their own destiny in their bid to reach the conference's championship game.

Maryland (6-3, 3-2) fell back into a tie with Florida State and Wake Forest for the Atlantic Division lead.

Dustin Keys kicked three field goals for Virginia Tech, the last of which came midway through the fourth quarter to give the Hokies a 10-point cushion.

Maryland scored 10 unanswered points in the third period to cut its deficit to seven. The Terrapins' third-period touchdown came on a 63-yard pass from Chris Turner to Darrius Heyward-Bey.
