Ruben Amaro named GM of Phillies

PHILADELPHIA, Nov. 3 (UPI) -- Former major-leaguer Ruben Amaro Jr. was introduced Monday as the new general manager of the World Series champion Philadelphia Phillies.

Amaro replaces Pat Gillick, who had decided to leave the GM post after this season. Billick will remain with the team in a different job.

The Phillies won the series in five games, defeating the Tampa Bay Rays.

"I know that people measure us by championships and we have reached that pinnacle now," Amaro said at a news conference. "We want to stay there and be a contender."

The 43-year-old Amaro was an assistant GM under Gillick and also worked for former GM Ed Wade, who is now with the Houston Astros.

Amaro played for the California Angels, Phillies and Cleveland Indians during an eight-year career.
