Tsonga, Nalbandian advance to Paris tennis final

PARIS, Nov. 1 (UPI) -- French crowd favorite Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and defending champion David Nalbandian were semifinal winners Saturday at the Paribas Paris Masters tennis tournament.

The 13th-seeded Tsonga advanced to the championship match with a 6-4, 6-3 triumph over American James Blake, the tournament's 11th seed. Tsonga recorded 12 aces and never suffered a service break.

Nalbandian, an Argentine, was a 6-1, 5-7, 6-4 winner over sixth-seeded Nikolay Davydenko in the other semifinal.

Tsonga is in position to become the first Frenchman since Sebastien Grosjean in 2001 to win the event at the Bercy indoor arena. He has won one title during his brief career, avenging a loss to Novak Djokovic in the 2008 Australian Open final with a victory over the Serbian star in this season's Thailand Open.

Nalbandian had beaten red-hot Andy Murray of Scotland in the quarterfinals.

Sunday's Tsonga-Nalbandian winner will take home a $450,000 champion's check.
