NEW YORK, Oct. 30 (UPI) -- Manny Ramirez and Mark Teixeira, who both helped their new teams reach the playoffs this year, highlighted the list of players filing for free agency Thursday.
The free-agency period begins on the day after the completion of the World Series, and 65 players took advantage of the opportunity Thursday.
Garret Anderson, Jason Varitek, Derek Lowe, Ryan Dempster and Ben Sheets were also part of the group. Potential free agents have until Nov. 13 to declare.
Ramirez spent just over two months with the Los Angeles Dodgers after being traded from Boston, but he ignited the team to a division title and a sweep of the Chicago Cubs in the opening round of the playoffs.
He hit 17 home runs and drove in 53 runs in 53 regular-season games with the Dodgers.
Teixeira was dealt from Atlanta to the Los Angeles Angels in mid-season and hit .358 with 13 homers with his new team.
Anderson, who played with the Angels for 15 seasons, did not have his contract option picked up by the team after the season.
Varitek, the starting catcher for the Red Sox in Boston's title runs, batted just .220 this year.
St. Louis had the most players file for free agency with six.
