PARIS, Oct. 27 (UPI) -- American Sam Querrey was a first-round winner but three-time champ Marat Safin of Russia lost Monday at the $2.9 million Paris Masters.
Querrey was leading Marcos Baghdatis 7-5, 6-7 (5-7), 3-2 when the Cypriot retired due to a back injury. Querrey next meets fourth-seeded Englishman Andy Murray, who has won his last two events, including a Masters Series tournament two weeks ago in Madrid.
Safin, a former world No. 1, lost to Argentine qualifier Juan Monaco 6-0, 7-6 (7-4). Safin won this Parisian tournament, the last Masters Series event of the year, in 2000, 2002 and 2004.
American qualifier Robby Ginepri lost to Czech Tomas Berdych 6-4, 7-5; Croat Mario Ancic beat German Rainer Schuettler 6-4, 3-6, 6-1; and Russian Igor Andreev defeated Frenchman Paul-Henri Mathieu 7-6 (8-6, 6-3.
