Midshipman Wins BC Juvenile

ARCADIA, Calif., Oct. 25 (UPI) -- Midshipman out-sprinted Square Eddie to the wire to win Saturday's $2 million Bessemer Trust Breeders' Cup Juvenile at Santa Anita in California.

The margin of victory was 1 1/4 lengths. Street Hero was third, 1/2 length farther back and Terrain finished fourth.

Midshipman, trained by Bob Baffert and ridden by Garret Gomez, covered the 1 1/16 miles in 1:40.94.

The top two finishers set the pace in the Juvenile, with Square Eddie leading most of the way. Midshipman got past Square Eddie entering the stretch turn but Square Eddie rallied along the rail and made a race of it until the final yards.

Midshipman, a Kentucky-bred son of Unbridled's Song, won for the third time in four career starts and becomes an automatic favorite for next year's Kentucky Derby. His only defeat was in his last race, a second-place finish behind Street Hero in the Norfolk Stakes on the same course.

Square Eddie, who raced previously in England, won the Breeders' Futurity at Keeneland in his first and only previous U.S. start. He also will be a logical early candidate for the Kentucky Derby.
