Albertus Maximus Wins BC Dirt Mile

ARCADIA, Calif., Oct. 25 (UPI) -- Albertus Maximus came around the leaders on the turn and went on to win Saturday's $1 million TVG Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile at Santa Anita.

Rebellion was second, 1 1/4 lengths back, after leading briefly. Two Step Salsa set a brisk pace and led until the top of the stretch, then held on gamely to finish third.

With Garrett Gomez riding, Albertus Maximus ran the 1 mile on the synthetic surface in 1:33.41, just four one-hundredths of a second off the track record.

Albertus Maximus, a 4-year-old son of Albert the Great, came into the Dirt Mile with two wins in six starts this year racing exclusively in California. He had finished a quick-closing third behind Well Armed in his last race, the 9-furlong Goodwood Handicap over the same surface a month earlier.

Well Armed went to the post Saturday as the favorite but couldn't keep pace in the stretch run and finished well back.
