NEW YORK, Oct. 23 (UPI) -- Former NFL quarterback Dante Culpepper sent NFL.com an e-mail Thursday saying he is ending his brief retirement.
Culpepper, 31, announced his retirement in September after the Oakland Raiders declined to re-sign him and he was not signed by any other NFL club.
"Now that there are some real opportunities that match my desire to play, I will choose the one that is the best fit for both the team and me so that I can continue my NFL career," the nine-year veteran said in the e-mail.
The Raiders placed Culpepper on injured reserve in 2007 because of a strained quadriceps, clearing the way for No. 1 overall draft pick JaMarcus Russell to become their starter.
Culpepper began his NFL career with Minnesota after he was its No. 1 pick in the 1999 NFL draft out of Central Florida.
Overall, he compiled a 63.8 completion percentage, with 22,422 yards, 142 touchdowns and 94 interceptions. He is the Vikings' all-time leader in completion percentage.
