BASEL, Switzerland, Oct. 21 (UPI) -- Two-time defending champion Roger Federer survived a tougher-than-expected test Tuesday to reach the second-round of the Swiss Indoors.
Federer battled past Bobby Reynolds 6-3, 6-7 (6-8), 6-3, bouncing back from a semifinal setback in Madrid last week that ended a 10-match winning streak.
Second-seeded David Nalbandian also moved on with a 6-4, 6-2 decision over Albert Montanes and No. 3 Juan Martin del Potro was a 6-2, 6-4 winner over George Bastl.
The first round will come to a close Wednesday with James Blake taking on Nicolas Kiefer. In a second-round match, Mardy Fish will meet Feliciano Lopez.
