Texas still No. 1 in coaches' poll

ARLINGTON, Va., Oct. 20 (UPI) -- The top four teams -- Texas, Alabama, Penn State and Southern California -- remain unchanged in this week's USA Today college football coaches' poll.

The Longhorns easily retained their No. 1 ranking after pounding Missouri 56-31 and improving to 7-0 during the weekend. Texas received 58 first-place votes. No. 2 Alabama, also 7-0, got one first-place vote, while No. 3 Penn State, 8-0, garnered two. The No. 4 Trojans, 5-1, didn't receive any.

Oklahoma, 6-1, moved up one spot to No. 5 this week, swapping places with Texas Tech, 7-0. Filling out the first 10 were Florida, 7-1; Oklahoma State, 7-0; Georgia, 6-1; and Ohio State, 7-1.

Next up were: Louisiana State, 5-1; Utah, 8-0; Boise State, 6-0; South Florida, 6-1; Texas Christian, 7-1; Missouri, 5-2; Brigham Young, 6-1; and Kansas 5-2.

Six previously unranked teams were among the bottom seven schools in the poll's Top 25. Tulsa, 7-0; Pittsburgh, 5-1; Georgia Tech, 7-0; Florida State, 5-1; Northwestern 6-1; and Minnesota, 6-1. Ball State moved up from 25th to No. 22 on the strength of its 7-0 mark.

Knocked out this week were Michigan State, Virginia Tech, Wake Forest, North Carolina, California and Vanderbilt.
