
NEW YORK, Oct. 20 (UPI) -- Mike Modano scored the game-winning goal midway through the third period Monday to give the Dallas Stars a 2-1 victory over the New York Rangers.
Brenden Morrow got the other goal for the Stars, who won for the first time in their last three games. Brandon Crombeen and James Neal made assists on the game-winning goal. Dallas goalie Marty Turco stopped 28-of-29 shots, including all 21 he faced in the second and third periods.
Monday saw the return of Sean Avery, who played with the Rangers for parts of the last two seasons before signing with Dallas in the off-season.
Markus Naslund scored the lone goal for the Rangers, who have lost three of four after winning their first five games. Scott Gomez and Michal Rozsival each had an assist. Henrik Lundqvist allowed two goals on 27 shots.
