"I am obviously playing great tennis," said Murray. "I am happy to be back playing some of my best tennis so quickly after a long break; I just stayed relatively calm and found the big shot at the right time."

Murray's victory had assured Nadal assuming the top spot in the season-ending rankings on the men's tour.

Pennetta started the day with a 6-3, 7-6 (8-6) victory against Anabel Medina Garrigues. She won on her first match point, when Medina Garrigues' forehand shot went high over the baseline.
