MADRID, Oct. 18 (UPI) -- Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer, the top two seeds, were semifinal losers Saturday at the Madrid Masters tennis tournament.
Switzerland's Federer, the second seed, was beaten 3-6, 6-3, 7-5 by No. 4 seed Andy Murray of Scotand, and Nadal, the top seed, playing before an enthusiastic home nation audience, suffered a shocking 3-6, 7-5, 7-6 (8-6) loss to Frenchman and unseeded Gilles Simon.
"I am obviously playing great tennis," said Murray. "I am happy to be back playing some of my best tennis so quickly after a long break; I just stayed relatively calm and found the big shot at the right time."
Murray's victory had assured Nadal assuming the top spot in the season-ending rankings on the men's tour.
Federer, a 13-time champion in grand slam events, had held the honor for four straight seasons and became the all-time earnings leader on the ATP Tour earlier in this tournament.
Sunday's Murray-Simon winner will collect $490,000.
