LOS ANGELES, Oct. 18 (UPI) -- Michael Handzus scored with 1:41 remaining in overtime Friday to complete a Los Angeles comeback that gave the Kings a 4-3 win over Carolina.
The Hurricanes owned a 3-1 lead after producing three goals in a span of 6:20 in the second period.
Los Angeles closed within a goal when Dustin Brown came through on a slap shot with 2:05 to go in the second and Anze Kopitar tied it midway through the third by firing a backhander past Cam Ward.
It was the first contest of Carolina's season-long, six-game road trip. After two games on the West Coast, the Hurricanes will move to the East Coast and then finish the journey on Oct. 30 in the middle of the country against St. Louis.
Carolina has lost two in a row after winning its opening two games of the season. Jason LaBarbera made 25 saves to pick up the victory and came through with a big save on a 2-on-1 opportunity early in overtime.
The Hurricanes overcame a 1-0 deficit with goals from Ryan Bayda, Dan LaCouture and Mat Cullen.
