Police: Rugby star James committed suicide

WORCESTER, England, Oct. 17 (UPI) -- British rugby star Dan James organized an assisted suicide for himself in Switzerland after being paralyzed in an accident, police said.

Members of Britain's West Mercia Police department say after becoming paralyzed from the chest down in a 2007 training accident, the Nuneaton Rugby Club player allegedly made arrangements to end his own life, The Times of London reported Friday.

"(The) Deceased traveled to Switzerland with a view to ending his own life. He was admitted to a clinic where he died," the official inquest into James' death last month said.

Police alleged James' parents, Mark and Julie, accompanied their son to the Swiss euthanasia clinic, but have both refused to speak to investigators.

West Mercia Police Detective Inspector Adrian Todd told The Daily Telegraph that once a full inquiry into the 23-year-old player's death is complete, details will be made available.

"A police investigation is ongoing and officers have spoken with a man and a woman in connection with the case," he said.

"A report will later be submitted to the Crown Prosecution Service and an inquest into the death will take place in due course."
