Nadal leads Madrid Masters winners

MADRID, Oct. 16 (UPI) -- Top-seeded Rafael Nadal was among Thursday's third round winners at the Madrid Masters tennis tournament.

Playing in front of his home fans in Madrid, the world's top-ranked men's tennis player banged out a 6-4, 6-2 victory against No. 15 seed Richard Gasquet of France.

No. 2 seed Roger Federer was a 6-4, 6-1 victor over 16th-seeded Jo-Wilfried Tsonga of France, but No. 3 Novak Djokovic of Serbia lost, 6-7 (4-7) and 6-7 (5-7), to No. 14 seed Ivo Karlovic of Croatia.

Also, fourth-seeded Andy Murray of England downed Croatia's Marin Cilic, 7-5 7-6 (7-2); ninth-seeded Juan Martin del Potro of Argentina knocked off No. 7 seed and compatriot David Nalbandian, 6-4, 6-2.

Other winners Thursday were non-seeds Gabe Monfils and Gilles Simon of France, and Spain's Feliciano Lopez.

In Friday's quarterfinals, the matches are Nadal-Lopez; Federer-del Potro; Monfils-Murray; and Karlovic-Simon. Sunday's champion takes home a $154,000 first prize.
