MLS: D.C. United 2, New England 1

WASHINGTON, Oct. 16 (UPI) -- Francis Doe scored his first two goals of the season Thursday and D.C. United enhanced its playoff chances by downing New England 2-1.

United ran its season total to 37 points and jumped over Kansas City and New York (both with 36) into fourth place in the Eastern Conference. New England, already assured a playoff spot, remained tied for second in the East with New York.

Taylor Twellman gave New England the lead in the 59th minute with the 99th goal of his MLS career.

Doe tied it five minutes later on a blast from just inside the penalty area that got past Matt Reis. Doe then outfought a defender for the ball in the area and lofted a shot over Reis in the 80th minute for the game-winner.
