TUCKER'S TOWN, Bermuda, Oct. 15 (UPI) -- Jim Furyk made an 8-foot eagle putt on the first hole of sudden death Wednesday to win the PGA Grand Slam of Golf for the second time.
Furyk birdied the final hole of regulation to tie Padraig Harrington and then holed his big putt to leave Harrington as this event's runner-up for the second straight year.
The 36-hole tournament brings together the winners of the year's four major championships, but there were two spots open this year. Harrington, who earlier in the day was awarded the PGA Tour's Player of the Year award, won both the British Open and PGA Championship. Tiger Woods, the U.S. Open champion, is recovering from knee surgery.
Harrington and Masters champ Trevor Immelman were joined by Furyk and Retief Goosen.
Furyk and Harrington finished 36 holes at the Mid-Ocean Club with totals of 4-under 136. Goosen shot 141 and Immelman 145.
Harrington also reached the green in two on the first playoff hole (the 18th), but his eagle putt was hit too hard and it bounced off the back of the cup.
"I came here without a lot of expectations," Furyk said. "It's kind of a wonder that I'm even in the event to start with. So I kind of treated the week like I had nothing to lose."
