HAMILTON, Ohio, Oct. 15 (UPI) -- Lawyers gave closing statements Wednesday in the trial of an Ohio college football player charged with entering a woman's dorm room.
Zachary Marshall, who played for Miami University, is charged with burglary, The Cincinnati Enquirer reported. He testified Tuesday that he was drunk and entered the room by mistake.
Marshall looked at Melissa Samure, the alleged victim, as he apologized to her, the report said.
"I'm deeply sorry for everything that's happened," Marshall said. "I feel deeply regretful ... for hurting her, for scaring her ... and I didn't mean for any of this to happen."
During cross-examination, Assistant Prosecutor Jason Phillabaum asked Marshall about why he ran away instead of talking to Samure and explaining he had made a mistake.
"I just wanted to get out of there," he said. "I felt like I knew I made a mistake but hopefully it was just all going to blow over."
Marshall's coach, Shane Montgomery, testified for him, explaining that he had always appeared to be responsible.
