Yankees shake up coaching staff

NEW YORK, Oct. 14 (UPI) -- The New York Yankees announced Tuesday they are dropping third-base coach Bobby Meacham and pitching instructor Rich Monteleone from their staff.

Meacham was one of the two original coaches picked by Yankees Manager Joe Girardi when he was hired in November 2007. Meacham, who was Girardi's third-base coach with the Florida Marlins, replaced Larry Bowa, who took the same job with the Los Angeles Dodgers. Meacham played for the Yankees from 1983 to 1988.

Monteleone, a former first-round pick by the Detroit Tigers who pitched 10 seasons in the majors with the Seattle Mariners, Los Angeles Angels, Yankees and San Francisco Giants, had been a Yankees instructor for the past four seasons after serving as a bullpen coach from 2002-04.

The other members Girardi's staff -- bullpen coach Mike Harkey, hitting coach Kevin Long, bench coach Rob Thomson, first-base coach Tony Pena and pitching coach Dave Eiland -- are all expected to return. The Yankees finished in third place in the American League East at 89-73 this season, Girardi's first with New York.

MLB.com said the team didn't name replacements for the two dispatched coaches.
