The world's No. 1-ranked player had a tougher time than expected dispatching Latvian Ernests Gulbis, taking 2 hours, 21 minutes to post a 7-5, 3-6, 6-3 victory. Nadal won with the help of two service breaks, compared to only one for Gulbis. Gulbis had 15 aces, but also suffered eight double faults,
Fourth-seeded U.S. Open runner-up Andy Murray was leading Simone Bolelli 6-0, 2-1 when the Italian retired with a shoulder injury.
Second-round upsets saw Frenchman Gilles Simon beat 11th-seeded American James Blake 3-6, 6-1, 6-4 and Croat Marin Cilic beat 13th-seeded Spaniard Fernando Verdasco 6-2, 6-3.
Frenchman Richard Gasquet avoided an upset by outlasting American Mardy Fish 6-7 (3-7), 6-4, 6-3.
Argentine David Nalbandian upset Swiss superstar Roger Federer, the 2006 champion, in last year's Madrid finale. Nalbandian won last week in Stockholm.
