NHL: Detroit 3, Carolina 1

RALEIGH, N.C., Oct. 13 (UPI) -- Tomas Holmstrom scored in the second period and Ty Conklin made 27 saves Monday to lead the Detroit Red Wings to a 3-1 win over Carolina.

Nicklas Lidstrom scored with the man-advantage and Henrik Zetterberg added an empty-net tally for the defending Stanley Cup champion Red Wings.

Joseph Corvo scored the lone goal for the Hurricanes, who wore their new black jerseys for the first time. Cam Ward stopped 33 shots in defeat.
