"I felt like I played really well out there today," said Schwartzel. "I managed to keep it together. I'm very, very pleased. It seems like Madrid is the place for me. I'd like to see a couple more tournaments in Madrid."

He won 2007's Spanish Open, also in Madrid.

At 16-under 268, Argentina's Gonzalez (68) finished alone in second place.

Spain's Pablo Larrazabal (67) ended 15-under 268, good for third, and at 14-under 270, England's Robert Rock (64) and Alvaro Quiros (64) of Spain shared fourth.

Rock was in position to challenge the winner, but bogeyed the 18th and final hole.
