VIENNA, Oct. 12 (UPI) -- Unheralded German Philipp Petzschner downed Gael Monfils of France 6-4, 6-4 Sunday to win the Bank Austria Tennis Trophy tournament in Vienna.
It was Petzschner's first career title on the men's (ATP) tennis tour.
He avenged a loss to the eighth-seeded Monfils at the Thailand Open in Bangkok two weeks ago.
Petzschner, who had four previous victories this season, started this tournament by knocking off top-seed Stanislas Wawrinka of Switzerland in the first round.
Sunday, he broke Monfils' serve in the fifth game of the first set, and after Monfils broke back for 4-4, Petzschner responded immediately with a second service break.
He became the first German winner at the Vienna event since 2001, when Tommy Haas won it.
Monfils, 22, was appearing in his sixth career final, with his only title coming in 2005 at Sopot, Poland.
Petzschner, 24, earned a $185,000 first-place check.
