EDMONTON, Alberta, Oct. 12 (UPI) -- Dustin Penner scored two third-period goals Sunday night, one the game-winner with six seconds left, leading the Edmonton Oilers' 3-2 win against Colorado.
The veteran right wing's first goal at 5:57 gave Edmonton a 2-1 advantage and set the stage for his late heroics.
Center Shawn Horcoff scored on the power play in the first period. Ethan Moreau had two assists, while Oilers' goaltender Mathieu Garon stopped 31-of-33 shots.
The young Oilers were the last team to start the 2008-09 season.
Colorado scored on Joe Sakic's goal in the second and on Milan Hejduk's penalty shot in the third. Hejduk's shot was the result of a two-minute bench penalty against the Avalanche for having too many men on the ice.
Goalie Peter Budaj was beaten three times on 19 shots in the second straight loss for the Avalanche.
The second period was marred by four different fights.
