SANTA CLARA, Calif., Oct. 12 (UPI) -- Justin Braun scored the game's only goal Saturday night and Chivas USA beat San Jose 1-0, pushing the Earthquakes farther out of playoff contention.

Braun scored in the seventh minute after the Chivas USA defense cleared a San Jose corner kick. The Goats limited San Jose to just one shot on goal all night.

The win pulled Chivas USA (12-10-6) to within one point of Western Conference leader Houston.

The loss left San Jose (7-11-9) five points short of the final playoff spot with just three matches remaining in the regular season.
