VANCOUVER, British Columbia, Oct. 10 (UPI) -- Roberto Luongo recorded the first shutout of the NHL season Thursday, carrying the Vancouver Canucks to a 6-0, opening night blasting of Calgary.

Luongo, in his ninth season -- and third with Vancouver -- ran his career shutout total to 39. He had six last year, one shy of his career single-season high. Luongo made 26 saves.

Alexandre Burrows scored twice, both goals coming on slap shots.

Vancouver took a 1-0 lead after one period and then scored twice in the first two minutes of the second to break the game open.

Steve Bernier tallied just 23 seconds into the period and Burrows produced his first goal of the night at 1:57. Burrows scored the first of three goals in the third period off a feed from Ryan Kesler.

The teams meet again in Calgary Saturday night.
