Jankovic, Dementieva advance in Moscow

MOSCOW, Oct. 10 (UPI) -- World No. 1 Jelena Jankovic and Elena Dementieva won their Kremlin Cup quarterfinal matches on Friday.

Jankovic, making her Moscow debut, was a 7-6 6-3 winner against Italy's Flavia Pennetta, while Dementieva, the tournament's defending champion, beat fellow Russian Nadia Petrova 6-4 4-6 7-6, and faces Jankovic in one semifinal.

"It won't be an easy match," Dementieva said. "She is the strongest player in the world (and) she's playing terrific tennis."

Pennetta lost after failing to hold a 3-1 second set advantage.

Also Friday, Russian Vera Zvonareva beat Slovakia's Dominika Cibulkova 7-5, 6-4, and second-seeded Dinara Safina of Russia downed compatriot Svetlana Kuznetsova, the No. 5 seed, 6-4, 7-5.

The 2008 champion will pocket a $196,900 first place check on Sunday.
