MADRID, Oct. 9 (UPI) -- Paul Broadhurst made a closing birdie Thursday to join two others at the top of the leaderboard after one round of the Madrid Masters golf tournament.
Broadhurst, Marcus Fraser, and Magnus A. Carlsson all shot 4-under-par 67 at Club de Campo Villa de Madrid golf course.
"I just stuck in there really and had to make a couple of miracle shots to keep it ticking over," Broadhurst said. "I had a couple of very poor tee shots on 5 and 6 but it's nice to finish 4-under."
Broadhurst had bogeys at 5 and 6 but countered those with six birdies. Carlsson had an early bogey but also had an eagle 2 at No. 15 and three birdies for his 67. Fraser had a relatively calm round of four birdies and 14 pars.
A group of five players, led by James Kamte, is at 3-under 68 and share fourth place, with 15 others at 2-under 69.
Two-time Madrid Masters champion Jose Maria Olazabal shot 1-under 70, and is tied for 24th place.
