Green shoots 68 to lead Texas Open

SAN ANTONIO, Oct. 9 (UPI) -- Nathan Green shot an 8-under 62 Thursday that gave him a two-shot lead after the opening round of the Texas Open.

Green needed to birdie the final two holes at the La Cantera Golf Club to fire a 59, but he suffered a bogey at the par-3 17th.

"We managed to make a few putts early on and just got on a real run," Green said.

Olin Browne and Paul Claxton shared second place at 64 while those at 65 included Nick O'Hern, Jason Gore, Chad Collins, Patrick Sheehan, Tim Herron and Greg Kraft.

Green ran off five straight birdies beginning at the sixth.

Al Geiberger, Chip Beck and David Duval are the only players in PGA Tour history to record a 59.

"I did actually start thinking about doing that on the 15th," Green said. He then made a 25-foot birdie putt at the 16th, but his tee shot at the 17th finished in a bunker.

Justin Leonard is the only player among the top 25 on the money list to be in this week's field. Leonard, No. 10 on the list, shot a 70.
