Breeders' Cup to return to Churchill Downs

LOUISVILLE, Ky., Oct. 8 (UPI) -- Churchill Downs in Louisville, Ky., will be the site of the 2010 World Thoroughbred Championships, known as the Breeders' Cup.

The announcement Wednesday by Churchill Downs officials and the Breeders' Cup Ltd. marks the seventh time the home of the Kentucky Derby will host the Breeders' Cup. The series of races is set for Nov. 5-6, 2010.

"Churchill Downs has proven to be an outstanding Breeders' Cup venue and is extremely popular with our horsemen and fans from around the world," said Breeders' Cup Chairman William S. Farish, Jr. "Churchill will also provide an extraordinary site for our expanded two-day program of the championships."

Churchill Downs first had the Breeders' Cup in 1988 and then played host in 1991, 1994, 1998, 2000 and 2006.

The 2008 and 2009 Breeders' Cup series are scheduled for Santa Anita Park, in Arcadia, Calif. The races are set for Oct. 24-25 this year, when there are 14 races on the card worth a total purse of $25.5 million. The next year Breeders' Cup races are to be run Nov. 6-7.
