VIENNA, Oct. 7 (UPI) -- Top-seeded Stanislas Wawrinka was ousted Tuesday in first-round action at the $930,000 Bank Austria Tennis Trophy tournament in Vienna.
Wawrinka, ranked 10th in the world and looking to enter the eight-player Tennis Masters Cup Shanghai, fell to 125th-ranked Philipp Petzschner, 6-7 (5-7), 6-2, 7-6 (7-5). Petzschner had Wawrinka on the defensive much of the 2 1/2-hour match, forcing Wawrinka into 14 break-point situations, and collecting seven of them.
Second-seeded Fernando Gonzalez, also hoping to qualify for Shanghai, advanced but only after a tough 4-6, 7-6 (7-2), 6-2 win over Simone Bolelli.
Eduardo Schwank upset seventh-seeded Gilles Simon, 4-6, 7-5, 7-6 (7-5), while Philipp Kohlschreiber defeated Marc Gicquel, 6-2, 6-3, and Radek Stepanek advanced, 6-4, 6-2, at the expense of Pavel Snobel.
Also, Santiago Giraldo, who replaced Tommy Robredo in the draw when the No. 6 seed withdrew due to injury, routed Stefan Koubek, 6-1, 6-2, and Ernests Gulbis earned a second-round shot at Gonzalez with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Filippo Volandri.
