FLORHAM PARK, N.J., Oct. 6 (UPI) -- New York Jets defensive back Eric Smith said he would appeal the suspension and fine imposed by the NFL for his hit on Arizona's Anquan Boldin.
Smith was fined $50,000 and ordered to sit out for a game -- forfeiting his salary for that week -- after he made a helmet-on-helmet hit on Boldin late in the fourth quarter of the Jets' 56-35 win over the Cardinals Sept. 28.
Jets Coach Eric Mangini confirmed Smith's decision to appeal and set the NFL would rule by Tuesday. If the penalty is upheld, Smith would miss next Sunday's game against Cincinnati.
Boldin was trying to catch a high pass in the end zone when he was hit by two players, including Smith. He was taken off the field on a backboard and hospitalized for observation. While tests in New York were negative, Boldin returned to Arizona with the Cardinals. He has subsequently undergone surgery for a fractured facial bone and is out indefinitely.
Jankovic back at No. 1
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla., Oct. 6 (UPI) -- Jelena Jankovic regained the world No. 1 spot in women's tennis by winning her second tournament in as many weeks.
It is Jankovic's second stint at the top of the rankings. She first reached the top spot in the rankings of Aug. 11 but slipped to No. 2 behind Serena Williams.
But Williams lost her first match at last week's Porsche Tennis Grand Prix in Germany while Jankovic ended up with the tournament title. The result lifted Jankovic, who won the tournament in Beijing the week before, to No. 1 and Williams is second.
"I am very happy that the hard work I've put in is paying off," Jankovic said after the win in Germany. "I've been playing very well since the U.S. Open and my confidence is quite high. I will try to do my best again next week and as I've repeatedly stated, my goal is to finish the season No. 1."
There were no other changes in the Top 10. After Jankovic and Williams came No. 3 Dinara Safina, fourth-rated Elena Dementieva and No. 5 Ana Ivanovic. The rest of the top tier has Maria Sharapova sixth followed by, in order, Svetlana Kuznetsova, Venus Williams, Vera Zvonareva and Agnieszka Radwanska. Nadia Petrova, who lost to Jankovic in the Porsche final, moved from 18th to 14th.
Granollers ousted from Stockholm Open
STOCKHOLM, Sweden, Oct. 6 (UPI) -- Marcel Granollers, unable to overcome his poor serve, was an upset victim in first-round action at the $980,000 Stockholm Open in Sweden.
Granollers, who was seeded eighth, managed to get in just 38 percent of his first serves in the course of a 2-6, 6-4, 6-2 loss to wild-card entrant Kei Nishikori. With his serve abandoning him, Granollers had his service games broken three times in the decisive set.
Also Monday, Dominik Hrbaty dispatched Pablo Andujar 6-2, 6-1 in 50 minutes and Nicolas Lapentti rallied for a 3-6, 7-6 (9-7), 7-5 win over Ivan Navarro in the first round of the hard-court tournament.
David Nalbandian takes the No. 1 seeding into the tournament, which is worth $155,000 to the winner. Ivo Karlovic won the 2007 Stockholm Open but it not in the 2008 field.
Creamer moves to No. 3 in golf rankings
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla., Oct. 6 (UPI) -- Paula Creamer's victory in the LPGA's Samsung World Championship allowed her to improve two spots to No. 3 in the latest women's golf rankings.
Creamer collected her eighth career tournament victory Sunday at Half Moon Bay, Calif., and it pushed her ranking from fifth to third. The win, her fourth this year, also solidified her position in relation to next year's Solheim Cup selections. Her $1.7 million in winnings is second on the 2008 LPGA money list.
Lorena Ochoa owns a strong lead over No. 2-ranked Annika Sorenstam in the overall rankings. Creamer's victory gave her a ratings-point average of 8.83, just ahead of fourth-ranked Yani Tseng (8.82) and No. 5 Suzann Pettersen (8.53), both of whom dropped one spot in the rankings in the wake of Creamer's climb.
Cristie Kerr and Shin Ji-yai held on to their sixth and seventh rankings, respectively, but Helen Alfredsson improved one spot to eighth, knocking Karrie Webb down one spot to ninth. Lee Seon-hwa retained the No. 10 spot.
